In 1908 young Dutchman Dolph Kessler embarked on a journey around the world as secretary to Henri Deterding, chairman of Royal Dutch Shell. In Hong Kong he bought a camera to document his travels. He pasted the small snapshots into an album that is now in the Rijksmuseum collection. Mickey Hoyle analyzes Kessler's use of his camera and compares this to his written words. He places the photographic travel journal in a broader context.
