'Lover of light' called a French critic in 1912 the great Danish painter Peder Severin Krøyer, who for more than two decades was closely associated with the French art scene. Krøyer first came to Paris in 1877, and his many letters tell of the importance of French art not only for Krøyer's own development as a painter, but also for the artist colony in Skagen and Danish art history In Krøyer and Paris. French connections and Nordic tones describe the two art historians Mette Harbo Lehmann and Dominique Lobstein Krøyer's artistic development from the golden age tradition of the academy to naturalism and the modern breakthrough. They show how the inspiration from France can be traced in his painting technique and in the plein-air paintings from Skagen and point to how French naturalism left its mark on Krøyer's particular style.
