It was hardly surprising that Philippa should be a complete 'ugly duckling'. For the whole of her twenty-one years she had known nothing but the rigid, narrow upbringing of a strict Victorian uncle and aunt. She had had no ex-perience of any sort. Pretty clothes, make-up, boy friends, any social life, were unknown to her. But now she was on her own, and the ugly duckling was rapidly turning into a swan. She found herself a pleasant job. with a charming, friendly family, she began to take a pride in her appearance, and a most attractive man was taking a marked interest in her. And then, just when Philippa's happiness seemed to be complete. the jealousy of another woman threatened to destroy it all.
