Orphaned Harriet Devenish has spent all her life at a girls’ school where she receives regular payments of funds from a mysterious benefactor. Chagrined at having no family however, she invents a dashing guardian, Lord Richard Halton, to whom she sends regular letters. One day though, an actual Lord Richard Halton shows up, interested in finding out who has been writing him all these years.
