Senator Simon writes President Bill Clinton a series of insightful personal letters that provide a comprehensive overview of the problems affecting the future of America. Many presidents, including President Clinton, have governed from crisis to crisis without having the time to focus on the real problems facing the nation. Senator Simon provides a realistic, comprehensive plan for how our problems can be addressed, one at a time. He stresses that the Simon family must balance its budget or face the consequences, and that the federal government should do the same. If we fail to balance the budget, Simon contends we will burden our children with massive debts and the nation will suffer debilitating inflation. Although Simon is a life-long Democrat, he is remarkably frank in his criticisms of President Clinton. The Illinois Senator advises the President to "forget the polls and lead the nation." A good deal of Simon's advice concentrates on questions of leadership and character, rather than strictly on policy. Senator Simon contends that Clinton must be stronger, and not fear opposition: to change the course of history he cautions the President to resist special interests and become a dynamic leader, not a mere follower. Only with a strong, bold President can the United States conquer its problems and triumphantly lead the world into the 21st century.
