The private preservation movement has come a long way since 1967. We now have the opportunity of the past 13 years. The 1979 National Preservation Conference was a beginning step in this direction. The findings of that conference presented in this section are intended and institutions in the private sector as they seek to plan an agenda for the 1980s, an agenda that the National Trust hopes will result in a stronger preservation ethnic. For more than 30 years, the National Trust has given national leadership, impetus and support to private preservation efforts throughout the United States. Today, more than 155,000 individuals, 1,600 organizations, 180 corporations and 100 foundations make up the National Trust membership. Five years ago, the National Trust membership was 98,000. At the time of the preservation conference in 1967, the membership was only 12,000. This rapid increase is a further indication of the growing interest nationwide in historic preservation and of the leadership role of the National Trust.
