Catálogo de los esqueletos de las monjas del Ex Convento de San Jerónimo, Ciudad de México
Work detail
Recompilation and illustrative information on the osteological study of remains dating from the viceregal era and of which, to date, there is little research. The authorship of this catalog of historical relevance corresponds to three outstanding researchers in the field of physical anthropology and Mexican archeology: María Teresa Jaén Esquivel and Arturo Romano Pacheco, who died in 2014 and 2015, respectively, and Josefina Bautista Martínez, who inherited the custody of the investigation and leads the projects currently carried out. The book also explains the experience and difficulties to which they faced throughout the search, classification and conservation of the remains, as well as the conditions in which the neighborhood of San Jerónimo was located, prior to the findings of the bones. It was specified that this work documents osteological characteristics of each of the 207 skeletons found, of which number 26 is attributed to Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz; In addition, it was announced that studies are being carried out to determine the ethnic origin of those who lived in the former convent, since it is possible to consider the presence not only of European nuns, but also of mestizas, indigenous and even mulatto. This book is part of the collection Physical Anthropology, Sumaria Series, which brings together all those works that are the product of research with characteristics of this disciplinary area, in turn, is the result of a collaborative work that has required many years to consolidate and be finally published.
