Passion Play, 'Images of ritual worlds, 1987-2007', reflects a photographic odyssey through a world of rites and rituals. The book title alludes to Easter, to suffering and passion, to the games of passion, to the medieval mystery games. But also at other collective holidays that are celebrated passionately. The word 'PLAY' here means both play, as in acting, but also play, as in the games we play as children and adults. The photographs depict almost 20 different events, including Easter in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece, the Carnival in Venice, Pentecost in Andalusian Rocío and Day of the Dead in Mexico. The pictures testify to our need for myths and stories. The photographer has been fascinated by the playful seriousness and the human theater where hope and joy of mind marry with depth and sorrow. In the rituals, the dividing line between humble penance and rapture becomes as permeable as that between death and life. The book contains the essay 'Death and rapture' by the author and anthropologist Jenny White Passion Play, 'Images of ritual worlds, 1987-2007', speglar en fotografisk odyssé genom en värld av riter och ritualer.
