The turn of the twentieth century saw a sea change in the world of Anglo-American book, newspaper, and periodical publishing. More newspapers, magazines, and books were published annually than ever before, and many of these were reaching wider--and different--groups of readers, as population growth and literacy rates soared in both countries. The visuality of periodicals was also changing dramatically: with improvements in printing technology and variations in layout, periodicals were becoming increasingly complex visual texts. Transatlantic Print Culture, 1880-1940: Emerging Media, Emerging Modernisms maps this radically transforming print ecology. Building on recent work on Victorian print culture as well as the turn toward material historical research in modernist studies, the historians, media historians, and literary scholars who contribute to this collection extend the frontiers of scholarship on the ₃Atlantic scene₄ of English-language publishing as they imagine, elucidate, and practice new ways of grappling with this expanding and changing universe of printing.
