Emily an English actress arrives in America in 1859 where she meets and falls in love with a southern gentleman. But after they are married Emily realises Charles has been keeping a terrible secret from her - he is a slave owner. Emily finds herself befriending the slaves and helping them in secret. As civil war breaks out, Emily's life is in danger and she realises her secret could cost her everything.
