An eighteenth-century chronicler from Zierikzee described the Spanish commander Cristóbal de Mondragón as an exceptional person: "Mondragon had a noble heart that, even in an enemy, knew how to appreciate merits." Mondragón is the exception to the rule, the only Spaniard that is good. The positive image of Mondragón still exists in Zierikzee. On top of the Noordhavenpoort is a 'sword' that is popularly attributed to the Spanish commander who managed to capture Zierikzee for King Philip II in 1576. In addition to being in the Netherlands, Mondragón also appears to be a positively appreciated historical person in Spanish history. Someone who is able to conquer the hearts of both Spaniards and the Dutch must have been a special character. It is this idea that is central to this book on the life and memories of Cristóbal de Mondragón. Mondragón is de uitzondering op de regel, de enige Spanjaard die wel deugt. Het positieve beeld van Mondragón bestaat nog steeds in Zierikzee. Boven op de Noordhavenpoort bevindt zich een 'zwaard' dat in de volksmond wordt toegeschreven aan de Spaanse commandant die in 1576 Zierikzee wist in te nemen voor koning Filips II. Mondragón blijkt behalve in Nederland ook een positief gewaardeerd historisch persoon te zijn in de Spaanse geschiedenis. Iemand die in staat is zowel de harten van Spanjaarden als van Nederlanders te veroveren, moet wel een bijzonder personage zijn geweest. Het is dit idee dat centraal staat in dit boek over het leven van en de herinneringen aan Cristóbal de Mondragón.
