"This book provides a detailed account of the working lives of visually impaired physiotherapists within the context of the employment of disabled people in Britain. The study is underpinned by the social model of disability, which views disability in terms of environmental and social barriers rather than impairment. In the opening chapters the social model of disability, and the employment situation of disabled people, are explored. The following chapters focus on visually impaired physiotherapists and give a detailed account of the barriers they face at work and how they overcome, minimize or manage them. It also highlights the complex ways in which changes in working practices and legislation have impacted upon their working lives. Although the study focuses on the direct experiences of visually impaired physiotherapists, much of the material is applicable also to other visually impaired employees and to disabled employees generally."--Jacket.
