Beth was in love with her boss, but he could only dream of the brief passionate interlude he had shared with a Japanese girl long ago, and of the child he had never seen. Beth agrees to accompany him to Japan in search of his daughter. There, perhaps, the ghost of Madame Butterfly would be laid, and he would turn to her for solace.
