Lorna Hatherwood, a middle-class jousewife, lives close to Dickon's Wood. She is sheltered from her emotions by marriage to a dull husband, ten years her senior. Then the Army arrives and Lorna's restricted life expands as she catches the roving eye of ahandsome young medical officer.
