Gabbie And The Magical Garden by Paul Lundy is a portal fantasy/mystery novel appropriate for young readers. Gabbie follows her curiosity that leads her to a gate in a magical garden that opens into a realm, one where dead things come back to life. In the realm, the real and the imagined become one. Anything Gabbie draws manifests before her eyes.Trouble for Gabbie begins when she learns she isn’t the only girl in this world with an overactive imagination. Through no fault of her own, Gabbie is forced into a potentially-lethal game of hide-and-seek, just like the one Josie, a classmate, was playing when she went missing. As Gabbie uses the magical realm to track down Josie, Josie’s own frightened imagination changes the realm around both girls, manifesting plenty of new dangers for Gabbie; dangers she later learns are clues to Josie’s whereabouts. The realm becomes the battle of imagination. Armed with only a drawing pad, pencil, and her own wits, Gabbie must figure out how to use the power of the realm and solve the disappearance of Josie before this awesome and awful world claims them both.
