吴兢,唐汴州浚仪(治所在今河南开封)人.生于唐高宗咸亨元年(670),卒于唐玄宗天宝八载(740).年轻时立志求学,博通经史.他以唐前代相近的各朝历史以及当代史为主,一生尽力于史学.但是,他的撰著多已不传,行世的只有"贞观政要"一书.本书记载唐太宗在位二十三年中君臣讨论政事的政治文献.
