Mark R. Cohens "Under crescent and cross" in arabischer Übersetzung, oder, Wie eine Übersetzung den wissenschaftlichen Austausch mit der arabischen Welt konterkariert
Work detail
"This review essay asks whether the Arabic translation of Mark R. Cohen's Under Crescent and Cross: the Jews in the Middle Ages meets the demands of a scholarly translation, as far as regards generally recognized editorial and philological criteria. The main focus lies on two aspects. On the one hand, the translated text should be embedded into the Arabic literature of Jewish studies as produced by Arab scholars in recent years. On the other hand, the language of the translation should fulfill the philological requirements of a proper Arabic, in particular as a language of modern humanities and social sciences. For both aspects, the criteria of a serious academic translation are definitely not met."--
