Arizona Territory in 1867 was a raw new land where even the U.S. Army didn't appear to know too much about the Indians-except that they were Apaches, and deadly. And Loch Angevine was a raw new recruit, fresh off the farm, who didn't know much about the army. His ignorance bothered him and he met this challenge with all the dogged determination of his Scottish heritage. He figured he'd learn by studying and copying the best men in the troop. There was no way for Loch to know even the toughest sergeant knew nothing about keeping a whole skin in Indian country.
