1812: These are tempestuous times in the wool mills of the Pennine moors. Randolf Staines is introducing new machinery to Keld Mill, which will put many of the villagers out of work. Diana Skelton, whose father used to own Keld Mill, takes a strong dislike to Randolf, and when there is trouble amongst the dismissed croppers she becomes involved.
