This study examines the relationship between women and heresy in the early and medieval Roman Catholic church. Heretic movements often conceptualized gender relationships in different ways, frequently offering women opportunities for achieving authority that were denied to them in mainstream society. Tragically, this often occurred in the framework of violent and deadly confrontations, but the influence of these heretic women can still be seen in European culture today.
