’No me importa ser fea o bonita, solo quiero ser Erika. / I don’t care about being ugly or pretty, I only want to be Erika.’ Ecuadorian cartoonist Erika Coello thoughtfully, sadly ruminates over workplace bullying, their grandmother’s stroke-induced memory loss, and the self-soothing pastime of swimming and crying at the same time. In grayscale format, Erika’s compilation of autobiographical comics from 2016 through 2018 linger on pensive moments and metaphors like a unicorn with a broken horn, a house on fire, or the absurdist recurring character of Señor Piña, a heartbroken man in a pineapple costume enduring a break-up.
