Melinda Pratt was rescued as an infant from a massacred Indian village and given a loving home by her adopted father. Even though her new parents are accepting of her and her heritage, she struggles for acceptance in the nearby town, especially as Indian violence threatens the town and its people. Despite the harsh words and judging eyes of many of the townspeople, Melinda finds the acceptance and friendship she needs from Will, the boy who lives on the neighboring ranch. They've known each other since they were children and as they grow to young adults, they begin to realize that maybe they're suited for more than just friendship. Melinda and Will's relationship is put in jeopardy, however, when Melinda is abducted by Indians who want her to return to their tribe and become one of them again. When the Indian camp is plagued with small pox, Melinda becomes both the rescued and rescuer.
