Summary: This book describes Van Gogh's solidarity with Montmartre. His new surroundings motivated his drawing and painting. The characteristic windmills, vegetable gardens, the view of the city, he recorded it all with enthusiasm and in detail. Montmartre was the centre of artistic Paris. Van Gogh became friends with artists and for the first time seriously tried to sell and exhibit his work. By the time he moved to Arles, in 1888, he had achieved his position in the Parisian avant-garde.
