Catalogue Raisonne
Work detail
The innovative Ensor is considered to be the main forerunner of modern art in Belgium. His avant-garde work had a decisive influence on German Expressionism as well as on French and Belgian Surrealism. Masks, frenzied carnivalesque scenes and macabre tableaux are among the recurring elements in his oeuvre. Ensor was at ease in all styles. He remarked of himself that he "changed styles as easily as changing shirts." The full diversity of Ensor's oeuvre is presented in this catalogue raisonné, illustrated with a majority of color plates. The book also includes a detailed and fully illustrated chronology of Ensor's life and work.
