Work detail
A comprehensive publication featuring outstanding graphic design accompanies an unprecedented in Poland exhibition organised by the National Museum in Krakow in cooperation with the Vatican John Paul II Foundation for Youth as the only official undertaking of this type held as part of the Wold Youth Days ? Krakow 2016. The publication features a wide spectrum of nearly one hundred masterpieces of European religious art, created from the 12th to the 18th century by the most outstanding artists of that time, mainly Italians ? such as Donatello, Mantegna, Vasari ? but also Northern Europeans, e.g. Dürer or Memling.0In subsequent sections of the book, the authors present the basic iconographic types related to the cult of Mary Mother of Mercy such as the Virgin of Tenderness, the Virgin Mary in the Mantle of Protection, the Nursing Madonna, the Pietà. The presented altar pictures, icons, sculptures, mosaics and procession gonfalons predominantly come from world-famous museums and churches, mainly in Italy but also in Poland. This unusual and complex subject matter is introduced to the reader by some prominent experts on these themes ? art historians, theologians and biblical scholars.00Exhibition: National Museum in Krakow, Poland (24.06. - 09.10.2016).
