In a French village at the foot of the Pyrenees lived a strange, lonely child who never grew up. Seeing her stunted body people called her feeble-minded, but she was far from being that. Shunned by others, Marie Ollacery went her solitary way with contempt in her heart; and, through the medium of her distorted intelligence, saw with frightening clarity the weaknesses and hypocrisy of all around her. What an illuminating picture of French village life she locks away in her diary. How vividly every character stands out: Laide-Jolie with her hare's eyes, the village dwarf and his pigs, Aunt Aline, miserable brother Andre, M. Azurian from Paris, the poor nameless old crone who dies amongst her hens. How narrow is the life they lead shut in between the mountains and the sea. Later Marie is transformed, but the seeming miracle does not rob her story of its freshness nor its charm. In sophisticated Paris where love at last touches her life or back at home once more amongst her village friends she is at heart the same Marie whose queer, solitary imaginings keep her still apart.
