On board the schooner "Ladybird" three young ladies, the oldest of whom is thirteen, fresh from Virginia--Darrie, Belle, and Genia Starkweather--peer with half-frightened fascination at their approaching destination: a cluster of crude frame buildings called Port Townsend, in the untamed Washington Territory.
