Desde Heródoto hasta los albores del siglo XVII, pasando por Eratóstenes, Artemidoro, César, Estrabón, Plinio, Tolomeo, Dionisio Periegeta hasta la tradición periplética, bizantina y sus epígonos modernos, el mapa que está detrás o acompaña a un texto ha ocupado un lugar central en el devenir del pensamiento geográfico.
