Given name Robert Alfred John Walling. R. A. J. Walling (1869-1949) was born in Exeter in England and spent his professional life as a successful newspaperman. He took to writing fiction late in life. His first novel was published in 1927 and the first of the Philip Tolefree mysteries appeared in 1932. Tolefree is nominally an insurance investigator, but more of an amateur sleuth. His police comrade in crime is Inspector Pierce.
